Who is a Candidate for LASIK Eye Surgery?
LASIK is an extremely popular procedure for thousands and thousands of people who would like to have high-quality vision without worrying about glasses or contacts. How can you know if you’re a candidate for LASIK, the eye surgery that provides the convenience of excellent vision?
- You’re in good health and are not pregnant
Candidates for LASIK should be in good health. Candidates should have healthy eyes that are not injured, infected, or otherwise experiencing health concerns.
Another important physical qualification is that you are not pregnant. Once your pregnancy is complete, your hormones will return to normal. At that point, you should be able to undergo LASIK.
- Your cornea is suitable for the procedure
The cornea of your eye must be thick enough to have LASIK, because a cornea that is too thin, misshapen, or irregular could compromise your results. The thickness of your cornea can be determined during consultation and eye examination.
- Your eye prescription is within the right limits
Your eye prescription for your glasses or contacts must be within specific limits in order to be an ideal candidate for LASIK. If your prescription is very high, and it corrects myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism, you may not be an ideal candidate for LASIK eye surgery. Your prescription will be examined during your consultation and eye exam to help determine whether you are a suitable candidate for LASIK.
- You’re 18 or older
The eyes continue to change into early adulthood, which is why it’s important to wait until you are 18 years old or older before you undergo LASIK eye surgery.
