LASIK RESULTS
LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a surgical procedure that improves your vision by permanently reshaping the tissues in front of your eyes. It’s used to correct three major types of vision problems — nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and blurry vision (astigmatism). During the procedure, lasers are used to reshape the cornea to ensure light bends correctly and focuses on your retina. Consequently, you don’t have to wear glasses or contacts anymore, restoring optimal vision.
This article aims to explore LASIK results, including their permanence and possible risks or side effects.
Are LASIK results permanent? How long do the results last?
Yes, LASIK results are permanent. The surgery permanently reshapes the cornea to ensure light bends correctly upon entering the cornea. As such, most people can go decades without having to wear glasses or contacts.
Most patients retain at least 20/20 vision or better (20/15 vision) for at least 10 years after the LASIK surgery. In some cases, patients report a slight regression after several years, which occurs due to the natural aging process. However, these vision changes are so subtle that they barely even register it. In some cases, the patient may have to wear glasses while driving or nighttime reading, usually ten years after the LASIK procedure.
According to studies, only 35% of all individuals experience worsening vision 10 years after the LASIK surgery. Another study conducted on patients with myopia or astigmatism found that only 10% of them experienced weakening eyesight in 12 years. These studies show that a majority of individuals retain their perfect vision for decades. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), 98% of all patients are satisfied with their LASIK procedure.
However, LASIK only corrects current eye conditions — it doesn’t guard against age-related conditions. According to the American Refractive Surgery Council, your vision may continue changing after the LASIK surgery if you still have myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. Your vision may also change with age because of presbyopia, a condition in which your lenses lose their flexibility, incapable of focusing on nearby objects.
What if I have significant vision regression?
If you suffer from significant vision regression, you can opt for a LASIK retreatment, i.e., a slight touch-up to restore your perfect 20/20 or 20/15 vision. However, most people don’t ever need a touch-up because the vision regression, if any, is barely noticeable even after 10 years.
What are the LASIK night vision results like?
Most LASIK patients are concerned about night vision disturbances, referring to issues like glares, light haloes, ghosting, poor vision in dim lighting, etc. Some of the older laser vision correction technologies led to night vision disturbances — but that’s no longer an issue. Advanced and state-of-the-art LASIK technologies ensure you retain perfect nighttime vision, without any disturbances.
