Corneal Biomechanics ORA Diagnostics
Corneal Biomechanics ORA is a diagnostic procedure wherein a cutting-edge glaucoma device is used to measure the biomechanical tissue properties of the cornea. This article describes how the ORA device works and its benefits.
What is the ORA Device?
The Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA) is a cutting-edge device based on time-tested glaucoma “puff test” technology. The device’s foundational technology has traditionally measured the eye’s intraocular pressure (IOP), a crucial factor in glaucoma diagnosis. However, the ORA device is modified to accurately measure the Corneal Hysteresis (CH) and Corneal Compensated Intraocular Pressure (IOPcc).
The CH provides additional information about the eyes, specifically regarding the biomechanical tissue properties of the cornea. The IOPcc provides a more accurate measurement of intraocular pressure, making it even more effective in diagnosing glaucoma. The ORA device allows optometrists to determine if your cornea is strong enough to undergo a laser vision correction treatment without complications.
How does the ORA device help determine my candidacy for LASIK surgery?
During the ORA measurement, the cornea moves inward and out rapidly. The ORA’s optical system tracks this movement to measure the corneal hysteresis, which indicates the cornea’s viscoelastic tissue properties. Optometrists use this information to diagnose potential problems associated with the cornea, allowing them to determine if you’re suitable for LASIK and other laser eye surgeries. The ORA system allows optometrists to measure the likelihood of LASIK surgery being successful. It ensures that you’ll have a smooth and successful procedure without complications.
