How Long Does LASIK Surgery Last?
The results of LASIK surgery typically last for decades – or a lifetime. With LASIK surgery, the shape of your cornea is corrected, the source of many vision problems. Unless other events alter the cornea in the future, you should enjoy clear, sharp vision for the long term. The eye specialists at Pacific Vision Institute use a state-of-the-art, wavefront-guided LASIK system. Our custom LASIK surgery has an unprecedented level of precision.
What to expect post-surgery
After LASIK surgery, your eyes may feel slightly gritty or dry. You will be given eye drops to apply to stay comfortable. In the first hours after treatment, your vision may be foggy or blurry. Remember, your eyes were numbed with anesthetic drops which take a few hours to wear off. You may also feel some minor discomfort which can be addressed with an over-the-counter pain killer such as Advil & Tylenol.
The majority of patients achieve clear, sharp vision the next day or the following day. Your eyesight may not be completely stable at first and may shift slightly during the first day or two. You will need to wear an eye shield while sleeping to ensure you do not rub your eyes inadvertently. Do not drive until your vision has stabilized. You will need to take it easy for a day or two and avoid any activity that could allow contaminated water (such as pools, hot tubs, or natural bodies of water) to come in contact with your eyes. When showering, ensure that shampoo or other products do not come in contact with your eyes. Do not engage in vigorous activities or sports for one week, and wear goggles to protect your eyes when playing a more aggressive sport for at least one month.
How long do the results last?
The results of LASIK surgery can last a lifetime. However, in some cases, nearsightedness or farsightedness may progress due to age, and your eyes can slightly change over the years. No two patients are the same, and you should consult with your LASIK surgeon based off your medical history on how long your results should last.
When should I get my eyes checked after LASIK?
At Pacific Vision Institute, we will be carefully monitoring your recovery. After LASIK surgery, we will see you at several follow-up appointments, the first one taking place the day following your surgery. We will then see you a week later. You should expect several follow-up appointments the first year after your LASIK surgery, and after that, a yearly appointment.
Am I a candidate for LASIK surgery?
Not all people are good candidates for LASIK surgery. To find out if this surgery is right for you, schedule a comprehensive eye exam with us. If you are not a candidate, we offer many other treatments, one of which may be appropriate for you. To be a good candidate for LASIK surgery, you should be in the following condition:
- You are 18 years or older
- You have had a stable prescription for contacts or glasses for at least two years
- Your eyes are healthy
- You do not have any eye disease, injury, or infection
Will I have 20/20 vision after LASIK surgery?
The majority of patients will achieve 20/20 vision within a week or less. You will no longer need to wear glasses or contacts and can enjoy clear, accurate eyesight for decades, or a lifetime.
What is “bladeless LASIK”?
Bladeless LASIK surgery is an advanced LASIK method. The flap created in the cornea (through which the cornea is reshaped to correct vision) is made by a femtosecond laser, rather than a mechanical cutting tool. This approach has fewer complications and produces superior results.
What is wavefront-guided LASIK?
Wavefront-guided LASIK is an advanced LASIK technique in which your unique eye structure is mapped and measured, identifying smaller imperfections that may affect your vision. The data from the eye mapping guides the laser procedure to achieve a superior outcome, customized specifically to your eye structure.
